 | Welcome | Oct 13, 2006 |
This site is for Alfred Cheney Johnston photos, Ziegfeld Follies pics and info, other pics of Ziegfeld Girls, and historical items related to all things Ziegfeld up to 1931 (with some exceptions) when Florenz Ziegfeld stopped running the Follies. Historical Ziegfeld belongs to and is maintained by jane with generous contributions from the erudite and entertaining gentleman John. O.B. is the third member of my group and he is invaluable in helping with research and sorting out all my duplicates with his eagle eye. Nick/Max, my longtime online friend, is my PS guru and he merged his ACJ collection with mine many years ago and continues to help me in many, many ways.
The "Bob" always being mentioned is Robert Hudovernik, author of 'Jazz Age Beauties: The Lost Collection of Ziegfeld Photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston.' See links to get his book and image cds.
Please visit Dr. Macro's website (see links) to get Nick & my other older large size reworked Ziegfeld Girl images by ACJ. On Dr. Macro's site, the unknowns are in the Ziegfeld Girls Gallery. The named pics are on the Star's pages that have a "Z" next to their names. If in doubt which pics are ACJ's, my home page (see links again) will give you direct links to them.
On this site I try to post original ACJs only and originals are marked (origs). Originals may have had borders or logos removed but no other changes have been made to them. If I can't locate the original for a pic a reworked pic may be posted in it's place (rwk).
Risques and nudes are in albums viewable by CONTACTS ONLY. You must be SIGNED IN to see the albums. To become my Contact, request it. You MUST also tell me your age and your interest in ACJ and the Ziegfeld Follies in a sentence or two. Contacts are expected to participate in some way here or on Multiply. If you do not log on to Multiply for 2 months or more you will be removed as a Contact.
IF YOU ARE USING FIREFOX AND HAVE A SCRIPT BLOCKER ADD-ON INSTALLED, YOU MUST ALLOW MULTIPLY.COM SO THAT YOU CAN ZOOM IN TO SEE THE FULL SIZE PICS!
Thanks for visiting!

Ah, OB, I finally get your point :) Oh, well, nothing wrong with the old time burlesque striptease in my book and I love this tribal bellydancing. Eh, I don't really go for the Geisha thing. For some reason, it doesn't appeal to me.
I know Jan is at the top of your list and that Gilda Gray is running second :)
Hey wait... Sally Rand? Talk about burlesque and strippers!!! |
 |
Thanks so much for the nice words, Terry. Great to have you as our newest member! I hope you enjoy the site. Just jump in and share your knowledge, jane :) |

Thanks for creating and maintaining this site!

Babbler here. Jane, you stated that “women who look like women” referring to belly-dancers, I prefer the Geisha. It probably is a disservice to belly-dancers but every time I see one I think of strippers. Geisha are in the same business of entertaining men. The only skin you can see is her hands, neck and face. Her movements are slow and graceful where as the belly-dancers are larger and faster. Strippers on the other hand move slower with less clothes on than belly-dancers. “I prefer the Geisha.”
As to women, of course I like women and any rumor to the contrary that Jan isn’t at the top of the list is false (of course Gilda Gray is right up there and Sally Rand and Dorothy Flood, oh never mind). OB |
 |
OB, I must really be getting dense. “I prefer the Geisha.” Are you saying you prefer Geishas? To burlesque women? Or any women? |
 |
Babbler here, “And it's nice to see women who look like women, not stick figures!”. “I prefer the Geisha.” OB |
 |
OB, what are you talking about? Hahaha, such a cryptic comment. |

Shani, glad you enjoyed it. Harold Lloyd is my favorite!!! What guy! I recently bought his box set with my gubmint economic stim money. Been wanting it forever. I usually just transfer things over that I've posted on YT but YT compresses things so much that they lose so much quality.
With some things, like the last two silents I posted and the Fractured Fairytales and the last two Silly Symphonies (I think) I uploaded there directly from my computer. Oh and the cartoon with the Apache dance. Multiply doesn't compress as much and has a bigger screen so quality is much better.
Safety Last is Lloyd's classic with the famous "clock" scene where he's dangling from the clock hands from atop a building. Incredible! He'd lost fingers on one hand when a bomb prop exploded and he's wearing a prosthetic glove but you'd never know it. He hung there for long periods of time between takes.
Everyone talks about Keaton and Chaplin but Harold is number one in my book. He has a huge following on YT which unfortunately means I do too. Too many comments to reply to, hours every day of doing them. But everyone there is great. I've learned so much there.
Thanks for your appreciation! I'm glad to have introduced you to Harold :)
Oh and sent your links to Max and he loved the new take on bellydancing :) Well, it is a bit too late for me to start. On oxygen, had heart failure, etc... don't go out anymore either. I'll just have to admire from afar. Are you going to put any vids of yourself on YT? Would love to see.

Wow, I just watched a bit of Feet First on your sister site. You've done a fine job, and alot of work, getting all this loaded ... thank you!

It's never too late, Jane. Unless you are not feeling well enough ... I would be very sorry to hear that ... My Egyptian style teacher Terri's teacher, Ruby, is in her 70's. Movement is Life!
Yes, the costumes! the beads, the fur, the feathers, the netting, the two-toned chiffon, the devore velvet the ... oh, don't get me started.
The most lovely thing about bellydance is that it welcomes all shapes, sizes, and ages--unlike ballet or ballroom for instance...the focus is on expression of emotion with interesting lines and rhythms. That, not cookie cutter marketing constructs, is what beauty is about.

Fantastic links, Shani, thanks so much! Wow, a whole new area open to me. Every one of these women is wonderful. How great that you have Severina as a teacher!!! I'd love to see veils incorporated too. I'm such a costume freak :)
Now that this was brought up I remembered that when I was around 40 and at my peak :) before I got sick and old (yes, I used to be hot hahaha!) I was with my daughter at a store we used to sell at and there was a flyer for bellydancing lessons on the door. We thought it would be great fun and were going to sign up but never did. Now I wish we had!!!!!
Thanks so much for sharing all of this info and for telling us about yourself. So interesting, Shani! Great!!!!!

Hey Jane... yep, I began in cabaret belly and gravitated right into tribal fusion. Earthy, snakey, draws on all sorts of theatrical and dance elements--costumes are so funnnnnnn!!!, and you get to do duets! and you can dance to arab electronica if you want to! even add liquid dance! it's freaking awesome, just loaded with woman attitude. Cabaret style is glitzier costuming, playful approach, usually Egyptian music. What I want to do is incorporate veil into tribal fusion. Far as I can tell it isn't being done much at all. Zils, yes (finger cymbals), but not veil. I love working with my veil. You want to see the Queen of Tribal Fusion? Rachel Brice. Notice the hair, makeup, and head ornaments ... she could be on the cover of a ragtime piece of sheet music? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6MTj8xdjio&feature=relatedand one of her superstar colleagues, sweet Kami Liddle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPnVIW2d5vcand one of my teachers here, Severina, who does Tribaret... incorporating a bit of vaudeville, baby! Bring on the fishnets and polka dots! So American! And that is what Tribal is--like Jazz, it's a totally American invention. Is in no way the "roots" of bellydance, quite the opposite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6DGFUAzjdk |

Oh my.... Shani! Esther posted the hottest tribal belly dancing vid on her site: http://boruel58.multiply.com/video/item/520I never saw this kind of bellydancing when I was at the clubs in LA :P~~~~ Is this the kind you're doing? Whew! Hey, John, take a look :) Thanks, Esther. Always great stuff on your site! |

Nice to meet you, Shani :) I'll remember your name for about 2 seconds after I write this hahaha! Sorry, I'm getting more ditzy by the minute. Old age whether I like it or not. Hawaii... nice! I'm in the pit of Tucson, not by choice and not originally from.
So glad I could help with the pic I.D. Isn't it just great? ACJ had a great knowledge of classic paintings and history so it comes across in his photos. That's what you're seeing in that beauty. Yes, art!
Oh, don't worry about getting a handle on blogging. Just type :) I don't even know what a blog is. I refuse to know. I'm too old school for all that. I also am doing a hundred other things. I've taken a few weeks off from uploading (well, I was but I just uploaded some stuff to my other site here) to handle some personal biz. I had to take a break from it this weekend though before I killed someone... uh, not really hahaha!
I grew up painting. My mother was a wonderful artist but unfortunately also nuts. I was only allowed to copy so I did not develop any spontaneity. I stopped around 19 but in my 40s did begin to create in other media. I don't do anything now though.
Belly dancing? Oh, you must have a lot of fans online hahaha! I just had my Burlesque Stars vid pulled from YT last week so just moved it to my Mostly Vids site here on Multiply. I will miss the comments... men and women both sick of women starving themselves and about how slutty everything is now. How women used to be rounded and natural and things were sexy, not disgusting.
Anyway, blabber is my middle name. Again, so nice to have you in our little group! Shani Shani Shani Shani....

Jane, Call me Shani . .. well, you can call me lovely, too! Thank you so much for the cool site, and for satisfying my curiosity about this amazing photo of Peggy Callahan. I just love it that she is the tree, commanding the wildlife attention. And then there is the hint of the myth of the laurel wreath/Daphne? When I first lay eyes on this luscious image, the context in which I did only served to deepen the impression. But that is art, isn't it? A compelling gift for life to try and imitate. I will definitely post comments once I get a handle on blogging! computer literate but somehow managed to arrive fashionably late to the blog! And typical Gemini busy dabbling in a hundred other things... belly dancing the current obsession ... can you relate? Given your interest in these pictures, I bet you've some artistic inclinations yourself. I'm in the Portland, OR area. Hawaii (yahoo addy zipcode) was earlier...anyway, thanks again. |

tonia, sounds fantastic! How did you wind up with the scrapbook? Would you be interested in sharing scans of any of the pics? We'd love to see them. Caryl was a beauty, yes! Would love to know more about her life. Maybe you can post the info on your new Multiply site? That would be fantastic! jane :) |

I had never even heard of Caryl Bergman until I found this scapbook of hers. What a beautiful lady! I had heard of Sweet Adeline and show girl. And I had heard of her cousin Ingrid Bergman, but this beautiful lady lived an exciting life!! This scrap book is filled with photos and newspaper clippings and letters. It's a real piece of history! WOW! |

Thanks, rose, just as lovely unnamed :) |

Courtesy of stjn00 on YouTube, thanks! A fantastic clip from the only film of this all-girl orchestra that performed in the "Melody Land" number in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1927. Thanks so much to a friend on YT for pointing me to this. You won't... more | Ziegfeld Links | |
